L’Università di Padova è lieta di ospitare l'astronomo svizzero Didier Patrick Queloz, premio Nobel per la fisica nel 2019 per "la scoperta del primo esopianeta in orbita attorno a una stella di tipo solare".

Martedì 13 settembre alle ore 14.30 il prof. Queloz terrà in Aula Magna di Palazzo del Bo un incontro esclusivo con le studentesse, gli studenti, assegniste e assegnisti di ricerca/postdoc del Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia e giovani studenti di altri corsi di Laurea e Dottorato interessati, per parlare della sua esperienza professionale e della ricerca condotta da giovane dottorando che poi ha portato al premio Nobel, rispondendo alle loro domande. Moderera’ l’incontro il prof.  Giampaolo Piotto, direttore del Centro di Ateneo Studi e Attività Spaziali, CISAS.

Seguira’, a partire dalle ore 17:00, la nobel lecture, aperta al pubblico, su iscrizione, che ha come titolo La rivoluzione degli esopianeti, sulle orme di Galileo. Durante l’incontro, il prof. Queloz presenta al pubblico le sfide delle prime scoperte e i recenti progressi in questo nuovo campo di ricerca.

La ricchezza e la diversità dei sistemi planetari che sono stati scoperti fino ad oggi hanno cambiato il nostro
punto di vista sulla formazione dei pianeti e più specificamente sul nostro posto nell’universo,
evidenziando la rarità di sistemi planetari simili al nostro per quanto riguarda la loro architettura e
formazione. Un’opportunità di prospettive storiche per cercare segni di vita su questi nuovi mondi e per indagare così sulle nostre stesse origini.

Segue un dialogo tra il prof. Queloz, il docente Giampaolo Piotto, che introduce l’evento, e il direttore dell'Osservatorio Astronomico prof. Roberto Ragazzoni. Porta i suoi saluti dal podio il docente Fabio Zwirner.

The University of Padua is pleased to host Swiss astronomer Didier Patrick Queloz, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2019 “for the discovery of the first exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star”.

On Tuesday 13 September at 2:30pm, prof. Queloz will held an exclusive meeting with students and postdoctoral researchers from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, as well as interested students from other degree and doctoral courses, to discuss his professional experience and the research he conducted as a young PhD student that later led him to receive the Nobel Prize. The event will be held in the Aula Magna at Palazzo del Bo and there will be a unique opportunity to ask for questions. Prof. Giampaolo Piotto, Director of the University’s Centre for Space Studies and Activities (CISAS), will chair the meeting.

Following the meeting, starting at 5pm, prof. Queloz will deliver his Nobel Lecture, titled ‘The exoplanet revolution, on the footsteps of Galileo’. During the lecture, which will be open to the public subject to registration to the event, prof. Queloz will introduce the audience to the challenges of early discoveries and recent advances in this new field of research.

The number and diversity of exoplanets and exoplanetary systems that have been so far detected has modified our perspective on planet formation and more specifically on our place in the Universe, highlighting the rarity of planetary systems similar to our own in terms of their architecture and formation. This research opens new opportunities to look for signs of life on other new worlds as well as a new way to explore our own origins.

The lecture will be followed by a conversation among prof. Queloz, prof. Giampaolo Piotto (who will also open the event), and prof. Roberto Ragazzoni, Director of the Padua Astronomical Observatory. Prof. Fabio Zwirner, Vice-Rector for Research, will bring the Rector’s greetings. At the end of the presentation, the floor will be opened for questions.
